How to Boil An Egg (and win all the egg)
How to boil an egg?
Basic right?!
Why was this skill not listed under “basic” in my mental cookbook along side of cooking noodles and browning meat?
Tragically… I’d try and try but had the same 2 results…
1. I lost a ton of egg due to it hanging on for dear life to the inside of its shell
2. The shell would wound my thumb during our all out battle to win the boiled treasure inside
Thankfully… my good friend, who lovingly raises the chickens that lay our eggs, taught me the proper way to boil eggs.
It’s almost sexy how smoothly the shell comes off!!!
And best of all… I win the battle… I win ALL the egg… so suck it shell!!
WHAT YOU NEED:
- eggs
- boiling pot
- water
- slotted spoon
- large bowl
- more water
- ice
STEP 1:
Bring a pot of water to a good… rolling boil (make sure there is enough water to cover the eggs)
STEP 2:
Using a slotted spoon… carefully place eggs into the boiling water
STEP 3:
Leave the eggs in the boiling water (uncovered) for 14 minutes
STEP 4:
While eggs are cooking… fill large bowl with ice water… set aside
STEP 5:
When time is up… use slotted spoon to scoop out eggs… place into iced water
STEP 6:
Leave in iced water for 15 minutes
Step 7:
Take off the shell with ease… BATTLE WON!!!
Something else that should be filed under “basic” in my mental cookbook… jello… it ALWAYS has a nasty film on the bottom… I’ve tried using super hot water and making sure all the powder is dissolved but… no go… I suck at it… suggestions please!!
It’s Been a (triumphant) Pleasure,
Your Moderate Mama
I’ve observed the ‘sticking-to-the-shell’ thingy with fresh eggs. It’s not so bad with older eggs so what I do is make recipes involving raw eggs when I just buy a crate of eggs; then make hard-boiled eggs when they’ve spent at least, a week in my home. 🙂 About Jello, I’ve never had a problem following the cooking instructions on the pack.

I boil eggs in cold water and about 2 tablespoons of white vinegar for 15 mins. Then I turn them off and tend to forget them before sticking them in the fridge. I get all the egg, too.
My tip for Jell-o? Jell-o is the devil’s food. Don’t make it. Put up a silver cross. Coat yourself in garlic. (I have GI problems and am forced to eat the vile stuff periodically when I get sick. It is nasty. And don’t get me started on green jell-o.)

I love that there are more than one way to do things well!!
I’m sorry to hear about your GI issues and disdain for jello!!!
I use to have a lot of GI issues too… if you have not done the holistic route I’d love to chit chat via email… but if you are anything like me you’ve tried everything thing and get passed if people try to recommend stuff 😉

I have really serious Crohn’s. Holistic doesn’t work for me, sadly. Neither does food solutions. Serious drugs work wonderfully. I would rather not take them, but they work when nothing else does. Thanks for asking though. Because you’re right — folks offer advice all the time. It’s well meaning generally (well some people are quite insistent which make me want to poo on them). I actually do the same thing — offering advice. Oopps. I will use your tactic from now on! Much better to ask!

I have so sorry to hear it’s Crohn’s!!!! That is intense and effects your whole life… or so I’ve ben told. I’m glad meds have helped but I know what you mean about not wanting to be one them… they are a 2 edge sword… they help one thing and screw with another!!!

I’ve heard cold water is the key, but after running the eggs under cold water in the past, it still didn’t work for me. Now I see an ice bath is the key. Thank you. I’ll have to give this a try!

They (random people) do state the shocking the eggs in the cold water helps undo the expansion the heat from the boiling water creates, but I’ve also heard that adding baking soda while boiling helps – I haven’t tried that one yet!

I’ve tried the baking soda, I thought it made the problem worse, not better. Not sure why that’s a ‘life hack’.

You are so sweet. I never knew anyone that got so much happiness from boiling eggs. BTW this will work on any egg. I have got them off the nest and boiled them the same day and it works. I think Kate is right, I have been in a hurry and only left them in the ice water for half the time and they were hard to peel.
P.S. Jack got a kick from your post too.
